If we made a cart that had recycled content and it only lasted half as long, it actually would have a larger carbon footprint than if we had not used recycled (content), says Kinder. Here [with data] its more on the preventive maintenance side. In Salt Lake City, thats got the most recent automation as well as Raleighheavy optical sorting, which really helps out on making a higher, pure-quality material. Taipei, Taiwan-based SAYA (and its parent company Nan Ya Plastics) refers to itself as the worlds largest manufacturer of recycled PET, repurposing over 75 billion bottles every year. Now, under the SAYA brand, the firm says it is engaging in research and development (R&D) efforts to focus on the critical recycling and sustainability issues that face the textile and garment industry and redefine whats possible in renewal.. Then, to put that in perspective, this makes the others seem small, Chicago is 150,000 square feet. There were some delays in terms of travel restrictions in certain situations. What were trying to do is create a control room for these facilities where you can tell it, Hey, I want, for example, a temperature bearing measure on a conveyor. If that exceedsIm making a number up here220 F, then I want this light in the control room to turn red so that I am notified as an operator that Ive got an issue. After testing to push the limit, Toter exceeded its goal and created the EVR-Green Cart, which has a cart body made entirely without virgin resin. The company still uses its older machines, though the newer model is safer for employees, puts out more product over time, runs all the time, and is just as good in quality, Daddabbo says. Customers in the metal, waste and mining industries have several options to experience the wide range of available products and applications, from magnetic separators to sensor-based sorting systems, such as X-ray transmission, X-ray fluorescence and near-infrared, the company adds. We do see a lot of growth in the Salt Lake City market. Inside the warehouse is loud and warm, but staffers are hard at work, creating everyday products from small, plastic pellets. It can achieve 66 tons per hour, and one of the things about it is that weve got to make sure its fed on a continuous basis. That one will be about 5,000 to 6,000 tons per month. Customers will also benefit from container repair services in the Los Angeles area, as well as local parts fabrication. When it was soft launched in September 2018, Novetex billed it as Hong Kongs first new local spinning mill in half a century.. You can program a robot to prioritize what it picks. The acquisition of ConFab adds the most respected West Coast container manufacturer to Wastequips portfolio of brands. I am proud to work with and support Infinited Fiber Co.s cutting-edge technology, which can help me and the industry as a whole find solutions for some of the biggest problems of our time, and move toward zero waste and circularity., InLancaster, Pennsylvania, recycling leather is the focus of Frank Fox and Tom Tymon and their recently formed company Sustainable Composites LLC. The business specializes in the companys Mountain Tarp and Pioneer tarping systems, Galbreath hoists and Amrep refuse trucks, and Go To Parts OEM and aftermarket parts. Chicago is expected to do well over 20,000 tons per month. The company says it has been seeking textile scrap, cutting waste, overstock fabric and soon, used garments to convert into new products via some of its newly developed methods. The way I try to explain robots is they are very helpful. BB: So, Chicago is probably the one [of these three] that were the most secretive about if you will because thats the largest one. By the end of this year, Waste Management will have completed construction on three new MRFsone in Chicago, one in Salt Lake City and one in Raleigh, North Carolina. I would also say there is a lot of technology in terms of communications that these systems spit off, whether its a baler, an optical sorter [or] conveyors. But we also know that its gathering data on everything else that its not firing on. Its keeping records of everything passing through. So, most folks in the recycling facility are just doing quality control. The story of Chicago is interesting. Were investing in [robotic technology] at what I would call our older MRFs just because robots are a good bridge to when you do a full-on investment to the extent we did in Chicago and Salt Lake City. These situations were a little unique where we said wed open up new facilities in another part of town so that we can have more capacity, perhaps larger MRFs. So, we expanded capacity and moved to a newer facility. All service at these facilities is performed by factory-authorized and -trained technicians. Its 40,000 square feet. The [cart] body is 100% recyclable. It is hoped that G2G will help retailers do well and do good at the same time., Finland-based Infinited Fiber Co., founded in 2016, says it is commercializing what it calls a breakthrough textile recycling technology that offers a solution for the massive piles of used clothes currently being incinerated and piling up at landfills., The patented technology can convert discarded textiles, used cardboard or agricultural waste like straw and regenerate it into high-quality fibers with the look and feel of cotton, says the company. The gas and crude oil used to create Toter cans cant be replaced, and the process to obtain it can disrupt ecosystems, explains Kristen Kinder, vice president of research and waste stream sustainability for Wastequip. Brent Bell, vice president of recycling at Waste Management and president of Waste Management Recycle America, says the company traditionally retrofits, constructs or upgrades at least two to three of its MRFs every year, he notes that these three facilities were larger in size and processing capacity than some of the companys other MRFs. Following rotation, molds are cooled, trimmed, marked and assembled. According to Sustainable Composites, that would put a dent in the 1.75 million tons of leather waste sent to landfills or incinerators every year and provide a quality, sustainable alternative for makers of leather goods., The company says it took more than five years and $3 million in R&D, but their result is enspire leather, which Sustainable Composites calls a recycled leather product that not only replicates the look, feel, smell and performance of tanned hide at half the cost, but also dramatically reduces the amount of material that winds up on the cutting room floor, because it is supplied in 54-inch rolls free of holes and other defects.. A lot of equipment does get manufactured overseas, so they had some export shipping issues that were a little bit slower than normal. In Raleigh, we had an older facility. With those three facilities, they dont actually have robots today, but we do have robots in other facilities. But it will be open this year. Sustainability can be personal, and we can actively participate in the process. Wastequip employs about 325 people in North Carolina, which is roughly 10% of the companys total workforce across 47 locations in North America. A recording of the event is available at www.steinert.de. By providing new life to our old clothes we can demonstrate that it is possible to use less resources and repurpose what we have. So, then we said, OK, we have to make a decision: Do you rebuild the south Chicago MRF or do you just say, Lets accelerate this one so it can be a recycling facility that will hit on the volumes? We made that decision in 2019. Now, the entities have combined to create Looop, which HKRITA calls the first retail model of the G2G system. It will be launched at an H&M store in Stockholm on October 12. Fox and Tymon drew upon their experience in textile engineering to develop a process that could recycle some of the 25 to 60 percent of the leather that typically is discarded as scrap during clothing and accessory manufacturing. And in Chicago, we opened that earlier this year as well. We can monitor 1,000 metrics, but which ones will we actually take action on? They interacted with viewers and responded to questions. RT: Do any of the three new MRFs incorporate robotics? This alignment will allow us to take advantage of the strength of the Wastequip brand and leverage additional operational efficiencies to continue serving our customer base.. About Wastequip Wastequip is the leading North American manufacturer of waste handling equipment, with an international network of manufacturing facilities and the most extensive dealer network in the industry. So, we thought that would be a great opportunity to upgrade capacity and expand the MRF so we can handle more volume in the future there as well. SAYA says its RSCUW process reduces waste by 30 percent per yard by recycling cutting scraps and overstock rolls of fabric, which has historically ended up in landfills or is stored indefinitely in warehouses., Its RSCUW RAW product is made from recycled fabric cutting scrap and colored PET bottles retaining their original color. Overall, the company says it sees potential applications ranging from footwear and clothing to small leather goods, furniture and automotive seats.. RT: What are some unique features of the three new MRFs? As you can imagine, we get a lot of equipment manufacturers that say, Oh, look at this. Now, we can precisely measure that out. It will be capable of doing 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month once its fully running, and were expecting that to ramp up to those volumes toward the end of the year. Its fine to monitor all this stuff, but we show on the screens in there is what operators will take action on and if they see something indicating a problemwhether its maintenance, quality or operational. They soon identified their target: leather waste.. We had two facilities in the Chicago areaone on the south side and one on the north side. Wastequip introduced its corporate responsibility program, CORE, in 2020. For more information, please visit www.con-fab.com. Despite having a robust dealer networkwhich we will continue to maintainWastequip sought to provide current and new customers with additional and convenient options.. In Salt Lake City, we had an older [MRF] that wasnt very automated. HKRITA is excited to collaborate with our Swedish partners to bring our research project to life, says Edwin Keh, CEO of HKRITA. Under the terms of the agreement, ConFab will continue to operate as its own entity, with the existing leadership team remaining in place and reporting directly to Wastequip Chief Executive Officer Marty Bryant. Toter trash and recycling bins start as raw material, typically created from burning natural gas or crude oil, and undergo the companys patented molding process, in which molds are filled with plastic micro-pellets. We have in Chicago whats called a volumetric scanner thats scanning to make sure we know we can tell what input that facility is getting. The company acquired Toter, including its 30-year-old Statesville plant, in 2007. When I say, new optical sorters, they are a lot better than the older ones were in the past. BB: [Were making sure that] anything we invest in can easily adapt and accept other commodities. Recycling Today followed up with Bell to learn more about these three investments. The resulting knit or woven fabric has a unique heathered effect in shades from gray to nearly black., In development is the Garma process, which SAYA says will be available in late 2021. Wastequips broad range of waste and recycling equipment, trucks and systems is used to collect, process and transport recyclables, solid waste, liquid waste and organics. Working with Hannah Sheridan as head of design, Reuben Selbys collection is based in part on an ideology [with] a desire to highlight the radical shifts required to bring the fashion industry into a new era of sustainability, says Infinited. Wastequip is a manufacturer of waste-handling equipment. To lessen these environmental impacts, manufacturers can use recycled resin, which can come from consumers or other industries, to displace the virgin resin they use, she says. CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Wastequip, the leading North American manufacturer of waste handling equipment, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Consolidated Fabricators Corporation (ConFab), a West Coast waste container manufacturer. So, Waste Management was on board with doing an investment in an R&D type facility, and we really werent going to make it very publicly known that we had it just because it would just be for testing and internal purposes. BB: Definitely. This complex recycling process of used post-consumer garments will streamline the garment recycling by offering turnkey retail to fiber solutions to select brand partners.. The facility in Hong Kongs New Territories is known as both the Novetex Upcycling Factory and The Billie System. These carts are created using the same patented molding process used for the companys traditional ones. Its located next to a Waste Management transfer station. BB: It really is amazing with some of the equipment manufacturers today what you can get and gather. Its second facility is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Thats what makes Chicago really exciting, as well as the equipment in there is great. RT: What kind of data can equipment generate for MRFs today? In older plants, a motor would have burned up, and wed have to go down for a couple of hours to replace a bearing. It is made from post-industrial resin, Daddabbo says. In the Stockholm G2G system, customers can bring their old clothes, which will then be broken down into fibers and yarns to become the raw material for knitted new clothes. That [mantra] drove our Project25 and CORE initiatives. . The event attracted several hundred customers, according to the company. We hope systems like the G2G will inspire even more creative solutions to our environmental challenges. But robots really replace people. Salt Lake City opened up a few months ago. BB: So, Salt Lake City is a 50,000-square-foot facility. So, theres a lot of technology out there thats been upgraded and refined. We actually own the land and we're building it brand new on there. Several more Wastequip WRX locations will be opening across the U.S. in the coming months, the company says. Its allowed for a lot more automation as well as making sure the quality of material not only can be changed but gets picked out with higher accuracy levels. In retirement, the duo says they found themselves wondering how they could use their chemistry, engineering and new product development backgrounds to help improve the health of the planet. The twist: the bins made with less virgin resin should not compromise longevity and durability. Wastequip has been owned by private equity companies for many years, including HIG Capital of Miami, which bought the business in 2018. Why or why not? In the control room, its essentially some of our best operators and technology experts in the country sitting down and saying, What do we want this control room to operate and how are we going to make action on it? That was a big, one of the big takeaways. Weve been developing these behind-the-scenes ways to gather all the data to help us understand the quality, maintenance and operations and how we can make real-time decisions. According to Sustainable Composites, one of the first adopters has been New Hampshire-based Timberland Shoes. Now, its not completely AI (artificial intelligence)--there is human interaction involved to navigate through that--but that kind of is the concept now. It is recyclable and is made from recycled products., Daddabbo says that leave more behind than you take is a mantra of Wastequip. Textile recycling has gone beyond the pilot stage for HKRITA, which helped create a larger-scale textile recycling system in cooperation with Hong Kong-based Novetex Textiles Ltd., a commercial-scale yarn spinner. We call it an intelligent sorting facility. Thats a brand new building next to a Waste Management collection company. A lot of times in a MRFif you think about the way a MRF is designedoutside of the presort, the only reason why people are needed is for quality control because a piece of equipment didnt do what it was supposed to do. He continues, I believe it is my duty to do everything the right way when it comes to my brand, and to also encourage other brands to follow suit. This looks well in our lab. And were like, Yeah how would that work in a real environment with 15 percent residue rates?. We have about 10 of them today in a handful of different facilities. At the end of the day, you get a tip floor there that looks just like residential single-stream, our job is to make that the highest quality [material] possible and process that efficiently as possible.
